The Atlantic has a very readable article on Peter Turchin: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/12/can-history-predict-future/616993/ It's really very good although a bit snarky at times. Two things struck me. Quotes Peter saying it's too late to change the course the US is on. Suggests we may be beginning a final stage of collapse where financial resources of a state get exhausted. That pressures for disintegration will not subside until "elite over production" is lowered: one of the main outcomes of the civil war. Argh.

Also, this is a good survey of some other academic models of decline to civil war https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/civil-war-united-states-unlikely-violence/2020/10/29/3a143936-0f0f-11eb-8074-0e943a91bf08_story.html

In What is Love?
Great radio show on This American Life today on love. Although called can love be taught, they are really reviewing early childhood attachment and what happens when babies are not held. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/317/unconditional-love Coming from an adoptive family, neglect is the biggest thing on our minds those first few years. Our brains are primed to assess whether this new world will care for us or will not. If held, or brains develope trust and attachment. If not, trust and attachment whither and we struggle with love the rest if our lives. So hold you babies folks, always and forever! https://www.thisamericanlife.org/317/unconditional-love

In What is Love?
First Unitarian Church, Portland OR, Thruways Feb 21- Mar 14th, 7-9pm https://www.firstunitarianportland.org/events/looking-for-love/ Love is the doctrine of the church…but what is it? Where does it come from? And if it’s anywhere as near as powerful as many say, how can we honestly reckon with the vast lovelessness in our world and in so many of our lives? Can there be greater love in our lives and communities? If so, how we start? This community exploration of love will feature in-class readings, discussions, songs, and personal reflection with the goal of helping each of us on our journeys to go in peace and practice love. Sources will include bell hooks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. Rogers, Christian scripture, and others. Optional but encouraged home activities will include practices, reflection prompts, and movies. Facilitator: Maggie Starr is a member a First Unitarian and as a queer person, is a member of a lineage that teaches trust in the love that lives in our bodies, reverence for the ways we discover our true selves in relationship, and hope for the radical liberation of humanity.

Brian asked a good question if Peter has applied SDT to other CURRENT authoritarian regimes. I don't know, but maybe Peter can comment?
